Miduk
Linley met Miduk in 2010 through an Indonesian Catholic nun. He has suffered a dislocated hip when he was 10 that was not corrected. He no longer attended school following the injury, ending his education in 5th grade. His walking was very restricted. Within a year he had a major surgery for a hip/intestinal infection and was hospitalized for several months. His family had to sell some of their farming land to pay for his surgery.
In 2011 Miduk was able to go to the USA (Dallas Texas Scottish Rites Hospital) for care/surgery. He stayed with a host family in Dallas for 9 1/2 months. He had a surgery to help with his leg length difference. Miduk came back to Asia speaking fluent English and filled with many new experiences.
In 2012 when Miduk returned to Asia, he stayed with Linley and her family in Singapore for 2 weeks. During this time he had a chance to explore some future opportunities, including sewing. He has since gone on to attend a sewing program at a local handicapped centre. He has been studying sewing now for 18 months and will be continuing at this program this year. Prior to returning to his home he was with Linley on visits to some of the NLLB patients, where he met Tony. They became friends and have been able to keep in touch since, though were unable to meet until this month (April 2014).
Miduk joined Linley again for a week of visiting NLLB patients and got a chance to meet up with Tony. What joy the guys had together as we laughed and enjoy a great lunch together with other NLLB friends. Miduk enjoyed taking photos for Linley on their week of travel...and we have many great photos that we would not have had without his help! Miduk traveled back to the USA with Linley and then on to Dallas where he is visiting his Host Family for a 5 week holiday. He will return to Indonesia at the end of May.
Nov/Dec Update:
Miduk continues to learn at the Handicap Centre Sewing Project! We are SO PROUD OF HIM!
AMAZING MIDUK! He continues to learn sewing at a Handicapped Centre that teaches sewing and various other skills. He recently made 4 aprons for Linley that she commissioned from him. He was very nervous about doing them even though he sews daily. This is training for his future and one day we are expecting to see this young man in his own tailor shop! Miduk is the young man who did not walk for 5 yrs and them went to the USA for surgery. He now uses a single crutch to walk and even plays soccer with it! His life has completely changed and he has a bright future!
