Linley first met Pak Sarmo in 2007 in a remote village near his home in the mountains. He was suffering infected hands from his on-going battle with leprosy.

Pak Sarmo has had Leprosy for over 20 years and has never been able to complete the entire course of treatment due to lack of funds. Currently he is considered to have a resistant strain and not treatable. No one in his village nor his wife have contacted Leprosy. He and his wife have no children and must work in the fields themselves, though he is often too ill to work beside her. He sells simple goods from their simple home in their village. Their village is at the top of a steep mountain and there are 11 houses, though only 8 remain occupied. He can no longer climb down the mountain to take the boat taxi to the doctor. He depends on others to help him, while he and his wife do their best to survive.

NLLB has supplied nutritional supplements of milk powder, vitamins, antibiotics, dressings, soap and wound care supplies and continues to care for his needs. On a recent visit in April 2014, his foot had a large open wound and he was in need of antibiotics (which NLLB brought).
