Scabies: An unnecessary suffering
When visiting a great orphanage in Jakarta (to see a little Down's Syndrome boy that NLLB placed there in 2010), we saw many children with severe scabies. The staff had had the children checked, but had been given antibiotic cream .. which will not work of course.
NLLB friend, Ruth L., and I visited together and immediately went into action. We went to a local pharmacy and bought "Scabiemite".. though they only had enough for 4 children and there were 10 with it. We searched for more and Ruth had her driver deliver it after I left.
Suffering of the little children is great with scabies... the itching is nonstop and many times infection occurs from dirty hands. It is so easy to cure if the right medicines are given. We are also coming up with a plan to purchase rubber covered mattresses... watch for this update! Fabric-covered mattresses are cheaper, but carry more diseases that spread.
I heard from the Director of the orphanage yesterday that the children are so much better! Ruth will be working on the mattress replacement on behalf of NLLB... we needed someone in Jakarta.. and she has been reposted here! What a blessing
