Tony
In 2012, Linley brought 2 cleft lip/palate patients to Rumah Sakit Accuplast (Dr. Eddy's Hosp) in Medan, Sumatra (Indonesia). While visiting her patients that night, she noticed a young electrical burn patient who was in serious condition. It was late at night and this hospital had no ICU. NLLB agreed to help raise funds and have the patient transferred to a local hospital with an ICU. Tony was transferred to a larger hospital. Tony did well, although lost his right arm due to burn damage and has suffered crippling to his left hand. While in the hospital recovering, another NLLB patient, Miduk, met Tony with Linley in the hospital and the 2 became friends! They have kept in touch via cellphones.
After recovering from his burns, it appears that Tony also has an uncorrected dislocated hip (just like Miduk has). He has one heel that does not touch the ground. This causes back and hip pain and a limp. He is also unable to use a crutch or cane on that side due to his loss of arm. NLLB will seek help from medical professionals abroad to see if something can be done to help him.
Linley was able to visit Tony and his family in July of 2013. He was doing great and looked so healthy. Tony suffered his electrocution while trying to correct the position of the family's TV antennae for his bedridden/paralyzed sister. Deaths by electrocution are often deadly in Indonesia. The electrical current in Indonesia is 220 Volt.
In April 2014, Linley was able to bring Miduk with her to visit Tony and his family! For the past 2 years Miduk and Tony were friends, living 1 hour apart, but unable to meet. This was a very special meeting. Miduk and Linley were continuing their journey to visit other patients and Tony was able to join us and then take a bus back home. What a wonderful day we had... remembering our times together and planning future meetings!
A great time was had by all! Due to Tony's crippling of his hand, he has a difficult time holding a spoon. NLLB found some wonderful long-handled good quality stainless spoons and forks. They have been sent to Tony and should arrive this in 2 days. Indonesia has few specialized devices for crippled hands. We continue to seek to help our patients live independently long after the medical care we provide.
Tony is one of the most precious young men and friends we have!
